Commit to learning every single day

The Problem

I am going to be honest, I am not a reader. I have learned mostly by observation or listening but I want to implement the skill and habit of reading into my life. Th goal is to cultivate a habit of reading and committing time daily to this practice.

I am aware that any of you are already great readers but this habit is for those who do not do this. You can still join in though. Maybe it’s podcast or another version you want to add. As long as they are materials helping you grow and you are journalling what you are learning.

The how

For the next year, we’re going to spend 20–25 minutes a day reading or listening to something that develops us:  mentally, emotionally, relationally, physically, spiritually, socially, or professionally.

PRACTICALLY

After each session, journal what you learned. Write down the ideas that stood out, highlight something you want to remember, and ask yourself how you can actually apply it.

And don’t only read things you already agree with or understand. Go outside your wheelhouse. Read something that challenges your thinking, introduces you to a different perspective, or develops a skill you don’t currently have.

The Steps

  • Ask 5 people you respect “What book changed your life?”
  • Check out the comments on my post and see what people suggested
  • Map out 30 mins a day where you can start to read and journal.
  • Read for 25 and then journal for 5 summarizing what you learned. Used an actual journal with pen to paper or auto dictate in your phone. As long as you can document this information somewhere.

And reading doesn’t have to mean physically sitting down with a book. Audiobooks count. Find the way you learn best. 20–25 minutes. Every day. Learn. Journal. Apply.

The goal isn’t to read more books. The goal is to become a more educated, curious and developed version of yourself.

Note: This blog will be updated with learnings and findings as the year goes on. This is a living breathing experiment.
